Rheinmetall, the German arms manufacturer, announced that it has secured a significant contract worth 532 million euros ($572.8 million) from the Austrian defence ministry. The company will carry out a modernization project for the Austrian air defence system over a period of 48 months, beginning in February next year.
The contract, which can already be booked as an incoming order in December, marks a significant milestone for the Austrian Army’s “Mission Forward” rearmament program. The programme aims to enhance and upgrade the country’s armed forces.
Under the agreement, Rheinmetall will implement the Skyguard Next Generation system, part of the Skynex family of products from Rheinmetall Air Defence. This advanced system will be built upon existing weapons systems already owned by the Austrian army.
The comprehensive scope of the order includes seven tactical units. Each unit comprises four 35mm guns, a sensor unit for airspace monitoring, and a command post. Furthermore, the contract includes provisions for spare parts, training support, and 35mm ammunition. Notably, there is also an option to order an additional tactical unit.
The contract win reflects Rheinmetall’s expertise and reputation in delivering high-quality defence solutions. With this modernization project, both Rheinmetall and the Austrian Army are working together to ensure the country’s air defence capabilities are cutting-edge.
